HEADLINE: Leslie Cheung's final journey; Friends take turns giving eulogies in a simple ceremony of quiet grief as fans wait patiently outside

BYLINE: Winnie Chung

BODY: He lived his glittering life in the glare of spotlights and prying eyes, but Leslie Cheung Kwok-wing was put to rest in a simple, elegant ceremony attended only by family and close friends.

As photographers scrambled for a view of the hearse outside Hong Kong Funeral Home, and while more than 1,000 fans lined the street for a final glimpse of their idol, the scene inside was one of quiet grief as close friends took turns to say their eulogies.

One of Cheung's nieces was the first to speak. She recalled how her uncle would spend his last dollar buying presents for them when they were young and had patiently given them tuition even though they were disobedient. She also thanked the many friends who sat in the hall, in particular Daffy Tong Hok -tak, Cheung's partner for 18 years.

Singer Jacky Cheung Hok-yau asked if Hong Kong would ever see another star of the magnitude of the late Cheung. "Can you imagine the sky without stars? With the events of this past week, it seems like the sky has only one bright shining star," he said.

Others who spoke included director Tsui Hark, who worked with Cheung on many films, including A Chinese Ghost Story, and composer James Wong, who described Cheung as a "perfect artist created by heaven's artist".

As the eulogies wrapped up, strains of Cheung's hit The Wind Still Blows filled the air as pallbearers Jacky Cheung, Tsui Hark, lyricist Lam Chik, designer Eddie Lau Pui-kei, director Stanley Kwan Kam-pang, actor Tony Leung Kar-fai and two of Cheung's personal friends carried his coffin to the hearse.

Singer Anita Mui Yim-fong, who was making her first public appearance since Cheung's suicide on April 1, was so distraught she had to be helped by friends to board a bus that had been arranged to take them to the family reception at the Conrad Hotel, in Admiralty.

One old friend who was determined not to be sad was Taiwanese singer -songwriter Lo Dayu. "He was the James Dean of Hong Kong," said Lo, who is in Hong Kong to be a jury member at the Hong Kong International Film Festival. "

We shouldn't look at a person's life by how many years he has lived, but how much he has achieved. Look at how many albums he put out, look at how many films he did."

Cheung's funeral had been organised with precision. Friends were given cards to allow them to board five buses that had been arranged for guests.

The only thing that caused a mild stir was when singer Ken Tsoi Fung-wah turned up, causing a ripple of surprise. Tsoi had been publicly dismissed as host of a music show in the 1980s after he said of Cheung: "A moment's tribute does not represent a lifetime's honour."

Their enmity since then had been well-known. Tsoi said: "I feel pained. For a gifted entertainer such as Leslie to do this is such a shame. I'd like to say once more that we were not enemies."

Since Cheung's death, DVDs of the actor-singer's movies and concerts have been snapped up. Inner Senses, Cheung's last movie, topped the HMV sales chart last week.

Two Wong Kar-wai films - Days Of Being Wild, for which he won best actor at the Hong Kong Film Awards, and Happy Together - were fifth and sixth respectively.
